Tanzania president Magufuli visits ailing wife in public hospital

Photographs of Tanzania’s President John Pombe Magufuli visiting his wife in a state hospital have been trending on social media.

The images released by Tanzania’s State House shows Magufuli standing beside the First Lady at the Muhimbili National Hospital in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

The images have been hailed as a new example Tanzanian head of state’s humility, unlike many African leaders who resort to private or foreign hospitals.

Since his election in October 2015, President John Magufuli has shown humility, which has put him on the spotlight as a humble man close to his people.

Nicknamed the “Bulldozer”, Magufuli has won international praise for his fight to stem corruption and government waste including payroll fraud.

These recent acts have also earned Magufuli more popularity across Tanzania. Opinion polls currently show that the leader who was elected with 58% of votes, now has 96% of the population in his favour.

The country’s opposition for its part reacted as it continued to denounced his “dictatorial” tendencies.

John Magufuli has missed the last two AU summits, raising concerns over possible isolation of Tanzania on continental levels.
