Libya: Unity government convenes talks

Libya

The head of Libya’s unity government Fayez al-Sarraj has convened a meeting with various factions to seek solutions to the 5-year long civil war.

The call comes at the time when the internationally recognised Unity government has lost four oil ports in the North east of the country.

The loss of this infrastructure strategic for exportation oil, is seen as a hard blow for authorities in Tripoli and strengthens General Khalifa Haftar’s grip in the east.

The UN Special representative to Libya Martin Kobler acting as facilitator in the Libyan crisis, has warned against any further divisions in Libya.

During talks held ten days ago, Martin Kobler reminded the various factions about Resolution 2259 which prohibits illegal exports of oil from Libya and at the same time stipulates that Libyan oil installations must be placed under the authority of the Unity government.
