At least 10 dead in double al-Shabaab attack in Somalia

Somalia

A double suicide bomb attack claimed by Islamist insurgents al-Shabaab has left at least ten people dead on Sunday in Galkayo in central Somalia.

“Two car bombs exploded targeting the local government office. More than ten people were killed,” Mohamed Abdiqani, a police officer is quoted by AFP.

“It was horrible. The first explosion was caused by a truck filled with explosives and the second by a minibus,” Hassan Abdukadir, a resident narrated, adding that he had counted a dozen bodies, some burned beyond any possible recognition. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the explosions via their preferred messaging site, Telegram, saying “we killed at least 30 people, including military personnel and apostates”.

The militant group regularly carries out attacks against government, civilian or military personnel. In early July, al Shabaab killed 10 Somali soldiers when they rammed a car packed with explosives into a Somali army base southwest of the capital.

Al Shabaab is seeking to topple the Western-backed government and to set up an Islamic caliphate in the country.
