Ghana's Baba Rahman joins Schalke 04 on season-long loan from Chelsea

Ghana

German Bundesliga side, FC Schalke 04 have confirmed the signing of Ghana international defender, Baba Abdul Rahman, on a season-long loan deal from English Premier League side, Chelsea.

Schalke in a statement on their website said they were, ‘‘pleased to announce their latest signing. Abdul Rahman Baba, who passed his medical with the club on Sunday, (he) has joined the Royal Blues on a season-long loan from Premier League side Chelsea. The left back will wear the number 14 throughout the campaign.’‘

Baba Rahman signed a five-year deal with Chelsea in August 2015. He was brought in under Jose Mourinho, going on to make 15 Premier League appearances for the Blues. He also featured twice in the FA Cup and four times in the UEFA Champions League.

His parent club, Chelsea, also confirmed the deal noting that Baba would not only be uniting with a league he left a year ago but also with his former Augsburg manager, Markus Weinzierl, who took charge of Schalke earlier this summer.

The 22-year-old is no stranger to the German league having spent the 2014/15 season with FC Ausburg. He has played 51 Bundesliga games to date (0 goals), in addition to 24 second-tier matches (2 goals) during his time with SpVgg Greuther Furth.

The Ghanaian international started his playing career twelve years ago with Young Meteors of Tamale in the country’s northern region. He played for Dreamz FC (2010-2011) before joining one of the biggest clubs in the country, Kumasi Asante Kotoko (2011-2012) with whom he won local league title in the season he joined.

He was part of the Ghana Black Stars team that reached the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final, however, they missed out on the title, losing to Ivory Coast on penalties.
