American swimmer Michael Phelps gears up for fifth summer games

Michael Phelps is set to make American history at the Rio Olympics in August.

The American won the 200 metres butterfly at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials in Nebraska on Wednesday and in doing so has booked his ticket to a fifth summer games.

He will become the first American swimmer to make five Olympic teams and now has the possibility to add to his astonishing Olympic medal haul.

Phelps, who turned 31 on Thursday, is the most decorated Olympian of all time.

He has won a total of 22 medals, 18 of which are gold.

Phelps retired from the sport after London 2012, but returned to the competitive pool two years later.
