Rescue mission after Douala building collapse still underway

Cameroon

Residents and a fire brigade in Cameroon’s city of Douala are searching for survivors in the rubble of a two-storey building which collapsed on Sunday killing at least four people.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse, but it happened after an overnight of rains in the city.

It is feared that the death toll may rise as witnesses told the media scores of people were in the incomplete building which had a drinking spot on the ground floor.

“You see that everything is crowded, it is assumed that there are people under the debris. We will do everything in our powers to give every survivor a chance,” said Mefire Oumarou, firefighter

Non-compliance with architectural standards for construction was cited as the reason behind the collapse.

Authorities have demanded the construction of the building be halted.
