South Africa’s Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, has asked for additional resources to investigate the relationship between the Gupta family and President Jacob Zuma.
She told reporters that her office had been asked to probe “whether or not the government of South Africa, and in particular the president, unlawfully helped the Gupta family to choose ministers and other occupants of higher offices.”

The Gupta family has come under scrutiny in the recent months, after being accused of state capture and offering high-ranking ANC officials ministerial posts in exchange for business connections.
The unfolding scandal took a dramatic twist in March, after South Africa’s deputy finance minister admitted that the family directly offered him the substantive job in December.
Madonsela’s term as the public protector ends in October. She has received nationwide public support after taking Zuma to task over the recent USD 16 million Nkandla scandal.
