Two workers on a stadium construction site in Cameroon’s capital Yaounde died on Thursday when a part of the facilitycollapsed, the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium is Cameroon’s oldest sports stadium.
Local media sources are also reporting that there were other casualties who sustained injuries in the accident.
The Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium was under rehabilitation ahead of November’s female AFCON to be hosted by Cameroon.
Recently, Prime Minister Philemon Yang visited the stadium to mount pressure on contractors for prompt completion of the job in time for the competition.
Africanews correspondent, Joel Honoré Kouam,confirmed that ‘‘it is a part of the stadium under construction that collapsed,’‘ adding that details were still sketchy on the number of people injured as, ‘’…nobody wants to speak about the case for now.’‘
A press briefing by the director of works is expected in the coming hours to explain exactly what happened.
