New vaccine key to global eradication of Polio

New vaccine key to global eradication of Polio

France

It would be the second disease to be eradicated in the history of mankind, after smallpox.

Poliomyelitis – or polio – could be gone by 2018.

That’s according to the latest data from the World Health Organisation.

Only seven cases have been identified globally so far this year.

The highly infectious disease can invade the nervous system and cause total paralysis in a matter of hours.

The fight for eradication is challenging, long, & costly. But it is also possible, needed, & on the horizon! https://t.co/QBYDQhNxzw #GetVax

According to a strategic polio plan, the way forward is to switch the current vaccination pattern to include doses of inactivated vaccine.

Speaking to Euronews, Joel Calmet, Senior Scientific Director, Sanofi Pasteur said “Existing vaccination systems are based on what we call trivalent vaccines (Oral Polio Vaccine OPV). It is an oral, life-attenuated vaccine that has the three sources of Polio: types 1, 2, 3. Now the pattern is changing and to prevent risks linked to type 2, the vaccine will include a dose of inactivated vaccine (IPV).”

The aim of this new type of vaccine, whose mass distribution has just started, is to cut the risks of contagion.

Instability generated by conflicts around the world is a challenge, but not the only one.

“There is a first risk linked to safety. If we could have safe access to all children living in regions where polio is still endemic, it would be solved very quickly,” Calmet said.

“The second risk comes once we have finished the eradication, with all the risks that are attached to the manipulation of viruses that are hosted in research or production laboratories,” he added.

In the late 80s, there were 350-thousand cases of polio. Now Pakistan and Afghanistan are listed as the only two endemic countries.
