Atletico Madrid knocked holders Barcelona out of the Champions League with a 3-2 aggregate victory after Antoine Griezmann’s double secured a 2-0 second-leg win at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday.
The home side took an early lead against the misfiring Catalans who have seen their Liga lead collapse and are playing well below their exalted standards at the sharp end of the season. A second goal sealed their fate.
In the other match, Bayern Munich reached their fifth straight Champions League semi-final with a 3-2 aggregate win despite a 2-2 draw with Benfica at the Estadio da Luz.
Atletico Madrid, which eliminated Barca at the same stage of the competition two seasons ago, join Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid in the last four, with the draw set to take place in Nyon on Friday.
