Gabon: Ruling party MPs resign to protest immunity lift

Gabon

Nine MPs from the ruling party have tendered their resignations 24 hours after the President of Gabon’s National Assembly Guy Nzouba Ndama resigned.

The MPs are contesting President Ali Bongo’s decision to lift the immunity of three MPs without notifying the Assembly.

They consider the decision as arbitrary and and a threat to to their legitimacy.

We are members of PDG and in 2009 we supported the president Ali Bongo but we cannot continue this way. You need to see the horrible living conditions of Gabonese in enclaved areas of the capital.

The three MPs in question had created a dissident branch within the ruling party earlier this month announcing their intentions to submit candidatures challenging Ali Bongo in this year’s presidential election.

“We are members of PDG and in 2009 we supported the president Ali Bongo but we cannot continue this way. You need to see the horrible living conditions of Gabonese in enclaved areas of the capital,” one of the MP’s Philippe Nzenguet Mayila said.

President Ali Bongo has already announced his intention to run for another term in the poll scheduled for August this year.
