Mbeki scolds US foreign policies, explains how to remove Mugabe

Zimbabwe

Former South African president, Thabo Mbeki has lashed out viciously at US over its foreign policies while serving as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Thabo explains in a letter that in the context of struggling to respect international law, they voted against resolutions tabled by the US and its allies proposing sanctions against Myanmar and Zimbabwe.

According to the US, Zimbabwe had violated human rights in multiple instances.

“The West and its allies in our country strongly condemned our Government for voting against these resolutions,” Mbeki said.

He explains that they were accused of betraying the human rights posture in foreign affairs it was claimed South Africa had taken under the leadership of the late President Mandela.

According to International Law as laid on the UN Charter, the UNSC should take action against countries in the event that they present a threat to international peace and security.

“Despite its many problems and challenges, Zimbabwe posed no threat to international peace and security,” Mbeki said.

According to Mbeki, Zimbabwe did not constitute a threat to international peace and security, however, the Western countries in the UNSC were determined to ignore their views and impose their own solutions on them.

South Africa, supported by SADC and the AU, was directly involved in engaging Zimbabwe’s political parties to address all problems, especially the Mugabe – Tsvangirai rivalry.

Zimbabwe adopted the Global Political Agreement (GPA) in 2008, with the involvement of South Africa.

While Mugabe is still the supreme leader of the country, Mbeki concludes that the only legal and peaceful way to force ZANU PF out is by demanding the implementation of all the 2008 GPA democratic reforms.
