CHAN 2016: Zambia qualify for quarter finals

CHAN 2016: Zambia qualify for quarter finals

Zambia has qualified for quarter finals after beating Uganda 1-0 in the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

41 minutes into the game, Zambian striker Christopher Katongo shot a headed goal following a free kick at the Umuganda stadium in Rwanda.

Despite Uganda having 53 per cent ball possession, the cranes failed to press for an equalizer.

Zambia is now the third team to qualify for the quarter finals with a match to spare. Hosts Rwanda was the first team to qualify after beating Gabon 2-1 followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has became the second team to be eliminated after losing to Mali 1-0.

On Friday, Nigeria’s plans to progress to the quarter-final were thwarted after a 1-1 draw with Tunisia. Currently in group C, Nigeria’s fate and Tunisia’s will be known on Tuesday when they play Guinea and Niger respectively.
